so i have this idea for a book that i would like to write someday..im not worried about someone stealing the idea because it would take a lot of knowledge and research in order to make this project come about. the idea is basically about different characters who live in modern day society, that will portray the many different saints in the bible…i think it would be a cool book to write..
what do you think?

Chani, I think your idea of writing a novel based upon biblical characters is fantastic. You might want to read Rabbi Milton Steinberg’s Novels, The Prophet’s Wife based on the book of Hosea; and The Driven Leaf, based on the apostate Alisha ben Abuja in the Talmud. Or Joseph Heller’s book, David.
However, I believe that the Hebrew Bible is unique and is redeemed by the fact that everyone in it is fallible, one way or another, and not a saint. Moses Rabbanu made mistakes. King David committed adulatory and murder. The Israelites worshiped the Golden Calf, Jacob lied and was a conniver. Joseph was vain. These are interesting characters. And help us deal with our own fallibilities.
The Xian (Greek) Bible has only a few flawed characters in it – Judas, the doubting Thomas, and the criminals on the cross along side Jesus. Peter makes one mistake when he denies his companionship with Jesus before the cock crowed three times. But overall, they are all super-human boring saints. They are all one dimensional characters; You know they will always do the right thing using miracles. You as a reader are held up to a perfect ideal and thereby measure yourself as a failure. You will never have an Egyptian like halo around your head like they did. The Greek Bible is fictional. The Hebrew Bible is real and realistic.

thanks Elie! Well book #1 is done- though I do have another book idea related to Judiasm that I would like to write but that one I won’t be sharing with the public 🙂 this one sits on the back burner-and yes, Joseph is my weakness
would love to create a work revolved around him- biblical characters are not that out of touch from us- they can be found where you search for them- even in this predominantly mundane world 🙂

You can rely for the most part on people’s laziness and ignorance to form a protective wall around your work. Maimonides had little faith in the masses so he purposely tripped them up with vagaries so that they don’t take quotes out of context.
